Kathryn Plummer, violist, is widely recognized for her recital artistry throughout the United States and Europe. As a soloist she has performed at the National Gallery of Art, Alice Tully Hall, on National Public Radio, and at the XIV, XXIII and XXXVI International Viola Congresses. She has appeared as soloist with the Nashville Symphony Orchestra, the Festival der Zukunft Orchestra (Switzerland), the Anchorage Symphony Festival Orchestra, the Peninsula Festival Orchestra, the Aspen Festival Student Orchestra and the Indiana University Orchestra. In 1987 she gave the world premier of Variations for Viola, Harp and Strings by Alan Shulman at the XIV International Viola Congress. As a former violist with Blair String Quartet, she presented several world premiers and debuted in Carnegie Recital Hall. Each summer Ms. Plummer performs with the Festival der Zukunft and she has appeared with the Smithsonian Chamber Players, the Sitka Music Festival, the Seattle Chamber Music Festival, the Sedona Music Festival, the Notre Dame Chamber Players, the Richardson Chamber Music Festival, the St. Cere Festival (France), the Kapelle Trio, the Trio de Barcelona (Spain) and the Craftsbury Chamber Players. In addition to her active performing career, Ms. Plummer has taught at Colorado’s Aspen Music Festival, Rocky Ridge Music Center and the Viola Workout Camp. Other summer teaching experiences include the Heber Springs Music Festival (Arkansas), the Curs Internacional de Musica de Vic (Spain) and the Wahlwieser Musikwochen Festival (Germany). Ms. Plummer is a former Associate Professor at Oberlin Conservatory of Music. She began her career as assistant principal violist with the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra and during six consecutive summers was principal violist of the Aspen Chamber Orchestra. She was principal violist with the Peninsula Festival Orchestra and in 1996, she served as interim principal violist with the Nashville Symphony Orchestra. As a frequent adjudicator, she has judged competitions including the Fischoff, Corpus Christi, and MTNA. Ms. Plummer studied with David Dawson at Indiana University and with Walter Trampler at the Juilliard School. Additional studies were with Samuel Rhodes, Martha Katz and Gyorgy Sebok, chamber studies with William Primrose, Janos Starker and members of the Juilliard and Berkshire String Quartets. Recordings are on Orpheus, Red Mark, Varese Sarabande, Pantheon and Gasparo labels. Her live performance of the Telemann Viola Concerto from the Festival der Zukunft was issued on CD. Ms. Plummer is Professor of Viola at the Vanderbilt University's Blair School of Music, is President of the Tennessee Viola Society and is a national board member of the American Viola Society.
